Diaries and journals kept by the former residents may remark on a change in the weather, with the cold and harsh climate becoming more hostile as of late. Others remark strange lights in the skies, dating several weeks or so ago, strange noises in the air, issues with power and electrical items. Some make mentions of changes to the wildlife, with wolves coming close to the town even when they had never done so before. One or two mention problems on the Mainland, with increasing difficulty of reaching out to loved ones who don’t live in the Northern Territories, or deliveries being unable to arrive. The growing trend is that something odd and terrible has been happening, although no one can truly explain what, and the problems have been growing increasingly worse and worse up to the final entries. You might note that the actual years and dates might not line up with your own: the current year given in these entries is 2014.

They would reveal that there has been a very noticeable drop in property values as of late, indicating that while Milton has been in a slow decline for decades — there's been some particular decline over the past 12 to 18 months. Post and food/commercial deliveries have been sporadic for a long time. The actual crisis itself: with the townsfolk dying or absconding Milton, happened no more than a couple of weeks before the Interlopers began arriving — it's hard to completely tell due to plenty of the bodies being preserved by the cold.
If you ask him where you are, he will simply respond: “This is Milton, of the Northern Territories.”
If you ask how you came to be here, he will shake his head: “Something has changed. The sky, it was… full of light. The Flare. I felt you coming, a great arrival. But I cannot say for certain how, or why you are here.”
"You were not the first. Another came here, long before you all. She wandered in from the wilds. Enola. But I do not know where she might be, or if she is even alive."
There is a notable difference between auroras in the past and the Aurora as it's known now. However, it's in a kind of three stages: up until about several weeks before Interlopers first started making an appearance in the world, auroras were typical (as in the real world).
In that several week period, there was a change in the auroras, with residents remarking about strange lights in the skies, strange noises in the air, issues with power and electrical items. This was the early stages of how the Aurora has come to be, culminating in what Methuselah has referred to as 'The Flare', which signaled the arrival of the first lot of Interlopers.
Since then, Auroras are how they are now: brighter, more colourful and incredibly loud and that effect all electronics/power.
note for la'an —
La'an has experienced a normal aurora on Earth and will have noticed some of these differences, though she does not have a solid scientific explanation for what might be causing said differences.
