[ For a moment, she'd considered it. For one singular moment, she'd actually given thought to what her life could be like if she didn't have the shadow of her ancestor hanging over her. But then the moment passed and she remembered how vital it was to protect the future. This is about so much more than herself.
And when it was all over and the device glowed green again, she nearly pressed the button. Nearly sent herself back to what would hopefully be her timeline once again. Seconds ticked by as she stared at the device in her hands... ]
James. [ His face clicked into her mind and she was running before she realized she'd even made a decision. If he was gone, she couldn't leave his body here. But what if there was a chance— Dodging guards took work, two left unconscious in her wake as she fought through the winding halls. How long had it been? Five minutes? Ten? She pushed herself faster, flinging herself through the final door and to the floor where he lay so very still. Lifting him up into her arms, she pressed the device into his hand, covering it with her own before pushing the button. Please. Please.
It worked. They'd both been transported to the Enterprise, and everything after that is a bit of a blur. She'd gotten them to sickbay, watched M'Benga and Chapel work their medical magic, and felt her heart nearly stop when his threatened to. It was only after he'd stabilized that she'd been able to breathe again, at least enough to explain why exactly no one else on the ship could know he was aboard. No one except the captain, of course, who had come down to sickbay while they moved James to a private room next to the main facility where there wouldn't be the constant risk of someone walking in and wondering what happened to Sam Kirk's little brother.
She doesn't move from his side until he wakes up. His hand stays wrapped in hers and she doesn't let go until she knows he's alright. She nearly lost him once; she refuses to let it happen again. ]
[ He hadn't wanted to die. It had been too soon, too quick, and he'd had...things to live for. His life hadn't been perfect but it had been his and he'd wanted to continue living it.
He hadn't felt the pain immediately. At first, it had just been a burning sensation, like he'd gotten to close to an open flame. That meant he was okay right? The pain had come in quickly and he'd seen the sky and then her face above him before...before his eyes had shut. For what he'd thought had been the last time.
He hadn't been at peace. He'd been angry.
When awareness comes back, the pain comes with it and he shifts slightly on the bed. There's a light above him and something keeping his hand warm. Is he dead? Is this what death is like?
He tries to pry his eyes open but even that seems to hurt him and he just manages to blow out a puff of air before trying again.
maybe one day we'll trade places.

He opens his eyes and sees lights. ]
Am I dead?
[ Wow, his voice sounds terrible. ]
