PERSONALITY

The entirety of who La'an is as a person has been shaped and colored by the tragedy and trauma of her childhood.

La'an struggles to connect to others, usually preferring to keep emotional distance between herself and those around her. This has proven difficult during her time aboard the Enterprise, where so many of the crew have managed to slip past her walls and form bonds of both friendship and found family. With those she is close to, she manages to smile and laugh at jokes, even gently teasing them to show her affection.

Chief of Security of the Federation Starship USS Enterprise. Descendant of Khan Noonien-Singh. Possibly the Federation's foremost expert on first-hand dealings with the Gorn.

APPEARANCE

Standing at 5'4", La'an is physically fit and carries herself like someone who has had serious athletic training. While on duty, she wears the black pants, boots, and red shirt of the Operations divisions. When off-duty, she tends to wear darker colors, particularly black. She doesn't wear much obvious makeup save for thick, dark eyeliner.

Speaking with an English accent, her features are identifiably Asian, and her long hair is always styled in tight twin braids that end in a simple bun or low ponytail. Unless she is comfortable with someone, her facial expressions and tone of voice are typically serious.

ABILITIES

Augmentation: La'an carries her family's genetic augmentations but has never shown signs of augmented abilities such as enhanced strength, intelligence, or healing capabilities. It is likely that these genetic traits have diminished over the generations. Had she demonstrated any such abilities, she would not have been allowed to serve in Starfleet.

Fighting: An extremely skilled fighter, she has training in various forms of martial arts, including full impact Mok'bara (Klingon Judo). She also has proficiency in all standard Starfleet weapons, as well as some antique (read: 21st century) firearms and blades.

Drinking: Look, she can outdrink a Klingon with bloodwine. That's not just a skill, that's talent.

torture, murder, parasitic hosts — When La'an was a child, her colony ship was captured by the Gorn, a lizard-like alien species that can be considered Star Trek's version of the Xenomorph. They were taken to a Gorn nursery planet to serve as food and breeding hosts for the hatchlings (who, like Xenomorphs, incubate within living hosts).

death of family, death of children, survivor's guilt, ptsd — La'an lost both of her parents and older brother, Manu, to the Gorn. Manu sacrificed himself so she could have a chance at survival, and she regularly struggles with grief and survivor's guilt. She only recently began speaking with a Starfleet counselor to help deal with her PTSD.

genocide, discrimination — La'an is the descendant of Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically augmented dictator whose rule resulted in the deaths of 30 million people on Earth. His actions eventually led to the founding of the United Federation of Planets, which has outlawed genetic manipulation among its membership. Additionally, no one with genetic augmentations is permitted to serve in Starfleet.

hate speech, bullying — Due to her heritage, La'an was frequently bullied as a child, being called things like "monster" and "augment" by the other children.
