CHARACTER INFO
• Character Name: La'an Noonien-Singh
• Character Age: 31
• Character Canon: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
• Canon Point: End of episode 2x10 (mid-transporter)
• Character History: Memory Alpha wiki (updated through 2x03) + Season 2 wiki
• Character Personality:
— Positive Trait: Dedicated to protecting others. La'an takes nothing more seriously than her work as Chief of Security, and she does everything she can to instill this in those she trains. Perhaps as a response to the trauma of not being able to protect even a single soul aboard her doomed colony ship, she will do whatever it takes to keep others safe. This is best seen when she willingly infiltrates a planet that has been invaded by the Gorn to rescue civilians and Starfleet personnel, despite the very real risk of death and bringing up her own deep emotional trauma. She doesn't hesitate once or show any sign of her fear, focusing entirely on the mission.
— Positive Trait: Practical in all things. La'an thinks strategically, taking a practical approach to nearly everything in her life regardless of the potential personal cost. When the Enterprise is being hunted by the Gorn, she convinces Spock to help her remember her traumatic first encounter with the vicious aliens because the potential of helping save the ship is worth the psychological risk to herself. And when the entire ship suddenly starts behaving like they're living in a musical, she strategically times her own emotional songburst for when no one will overhear and warns the captain of the security risk posed by exposing secrets via spontaneous singing.
— Positive Trait: Adapts easily. When it doesn't involve her personal feelings, La'an adapts quickly and easily to new situations thrown her way. This is especially seen during her time off the Enterprise, both on away missions (like when she comes up with a plan on the fly to trick locals so they can infiltrate a facility) and when she is on leave from Starfleet (when she goes undercover as an arms dealer to uncover the truth of a Klingon group trying to restart the war).
— Negative Trait: Emotionally closed off. La'an struggles to connect with other people, particularly due to the trauma she experienced as a child. Losing everyone she knew and loved made her wary of forming such connections again. Even when she meets a child who survived a Gorn planet as she did, she fights the emotional ties that try to form, only giving in when another member of the crew points out that she's possibly the only one who can help the child get through this terrible experience. (Also, see previously mentioned emotional songburst. "I want to let go, be vulnerable. Who am I kidding, I never met that side of me.")
— Negative Trait: Difficulty trusting others. Growing up, La'an was bullied constantly by other children for her heritage as the descendant of Khan Noonien-Singh, an augmented human who was responsible for the deaths of 30 million people, and this negative judgment from others has continued through her adult life. She automatically assumes that others will think poorly of her and acts accordingly, even in the case of her commanding officers, such as when she withheld information about her connection to Una from Captain Pike for fear he would deem her unfit to join the mission to rescue the other woman.
— Negative Trait: Stubborn to a fault. La'an is someone who will not bend unless given a direct order to do so, and even then, it will be under protest. When she first joins the Enterprise and is sent on an undercover mission with the landing party, she endures excruciating pain during a temporary medical procedure rather than submit to even light sedation. When the captain tries to connect with her on an emotional level to convince her to take the easier path with sedation, she blatantly pushes back by questioning whether he's giving her a direct order, to which he relents and lets her have her way.
• Character Skills:
— Weapons training (2250s models and "antique" modern-day models)
— Martial arts training
— Basic survival training
— Basic field medicine training
— Tactical analysis and strategy
• Character Inventory:
— ITEM ONE: phaser rifle (non-working)
— ITEM TWO: SS Puget Sound pin
— ITEM THREE: a photograph of her and Una
• Important Notes: The main difference between this canonpoint La'an and the previous canonpoint version I played in-game is that this La'an has been through heartbreak and realized that she wants to be close to people. It's a scary thing for her, and a big step to decide that she wants to change and be more open with others.
